Humanoid Robots in Manufacturing

OT POSITION NOTE: We explore the reasons why humanoid robots will not dominate the production line. We also discuss niche applications where it can thrive.
Generalized humanoid robots will not become prevalent at production-rated stations on manufacturing lines. Fit-to-function automation — fixed-arm robots, SCARA, delta pickers, cobots, purpose-built cells — will continue to dominate on cost, cycle time, precision, and maintainability. Humanoids will instead capture a different layer of the factory: the unautomated work process currently occupied by humans. The most prevalent of these are materials movement, organization and handling that are currently architected with the human worker in mind. It is in these areas where the opportunity lies for humanoid robots.
The acquisition costs of humanoid robots are rapidly diminishing and here is where the opportunities lie. The 2026 picture is a small number of robots doing documented, repetitive work at a small number of named sites. Verified 2026 deployments cluster deliberately away from task critical stations: tote movement, machine tending, bin picking, kitting, simple assembly. Agility’s Digit has moved over 100,000 totes under a Robots-as-a-Service contract at a GXO facility; Figure has fielded units at BMW Spartanburg after an extended pilot; Boston Dynamics has placed Atlas in Hyundai’s application center.
In the small number of deployments that have been made, these have been brownfield applications where they were deployed into existing manufacturing systems that were originally architected and built with humans in the system. These kinds of deployments can actually make sense because you do not have to rearchitect the entire line to meet or exceed current production flow targets. That said, in moving towards greenfield applications coupled with ongoing improvements to materials handling and assembly technologies in the future these deployments could be more transitional than permanent.
